むなかた・しこう　１９０３年、青森県青森市に生まれる。油絵描きを目指して上京するも、版画に転向。１９３６年、柳宗悦らの知遇を得たことを機に、民藝運動の同人となる。自らの作品を「板画」と表記。常識を打ち破った独自の世界観が国内外で高く評価された。
１９５６年 ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ国際版画大賞受賞。
１９７０年 文化勲章受章。
１９７５年、逝去。享年72歳。

Munakata Shiko, born the son of a poor blacksmith from northern Japan, is considered one of the greatest Japanese artists of the twentieth century. He first became known on the internationalscene when he won prizes for his woodcuts at the Sao Paulo Biennale (1955) and the Venice Biennale (1956). Munakata revolutionized the concept of the woodblock print, liberating it from the small-scale traditional ukiyo-e format and creating large-size pieces for screens and wall murals.

棟方は、1959年の1月から12月まで、アメリカ合衆国のロックフェラー財団とジャパン・ソサエティーの招きで、アメリカ訪問し、その年の夏にはヨーロッパ諸国などを旅行した。棟方はニューヨーク滞在中に、アメリカの代表的な詩人ウォルト・ホイットマン(1819-1892)の記念館を訪れ、かねてから邦訳で愛唱していたホイットマンの詩集『草の葉』(Leaves of Grass)の英文の本を買い求めた。滞在するホテルの部屋で〈ホイットマン詩集抜粋の柵〉11柵を制作する。ジャパン・ソサエティのアートディレクター、ベアテ・ゴードン夫人の回想記『グッドバイ棟方志功 没後一年追悼特集版1976年9月13日』によると、棟方は〈Perfectionsの柵〉を制作中に、彫り忘れた文字「S」を、欄外に矢印をつけて白と黒を逆にし、しかも字体も逆さにして、彫り加えたという。文字の正誤よりも、白黒の対比に重点を置いた棟方らしいエピソードである。棟方は「文中ノ間違ヒ亦文字ノ逆成スベテ棟方志たとうがみ功ノ責成」と作品を包む畳紙に書き添えている。〈ホイットマン詩集抜粋の柵〉全11柵は個々の柵名はない。扉おわりの柵または閉の柵と推定される柵には、ウォルト・ホイットマンのイニシャルW.W.の文字が描かれている。この〈ホイットマン詩集抜粋の柵〉は、文字や絵との組合わせ、文字の扱い方など表現上の技法から推測すると、1948年の〈瞞着川板画巻〉(図版8)から続く系譜といえる。棟方は、1959年以来4回のアメリカ旅行と1回のヨーロッパ旅行を愉しむが、これらの旅行がその後の棟方の板画に大きな影響を与えた。

In 1959, at the invitation of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Japan Society of New York, Munakata came to the United States. While in New York, he visited the Long Island birthplace of the poet Walt Whitman (in West Hills, New York) and bought a copy of Leaves of Grass to join his beloved Japanese translation of the book. Mrs. Beate Gordon, the Japan Society coordinator for his visit, pointed out to Munakata while he was carving these prints that he tended to reverse the "s" in some cases, and to leave it out completely in others.
He made some corrections, but on the outer cover of this set of prints, he wrote: "All errors and reversed letters are the responsibility of Munakata Shiko."
